Setting Up Our Florida Home
/Wow, have we been busy since we arrived in Florida in late October! Our new annual site is spacious and deep so we have quite a bit of room. We have enjoyed being here from the first day and it feels like home. So far, we are happy with our decision to sign an annual lease and stay in one place for a period of time. We anticipate being here every year from November to early April. I guess we are now officially snowbirds, although we will travel a little bit in the summer to some of the states we have yet to visit. Still fulltime RVers, just doing it a little differently.
As we settled in, we had one isuse. The area right in front of the RV was mostly dirt and sand with just some patchy grass growing so we were tracking dirt into the RV every day, even with a mat down. We decided that we needed to either build a deck or get stone to cover the area. After chatting with the campground staff and our neighbors, we decided to get a truck load of stone.
First, we took a bit of time to prepare the area by killing the little bit of grass that was growing, then covered it with weed block. After pricing the stone and delivery costs, Tim felt it was best to just get a full truckload to be sure we had enough. The campground staff was extremely helpful and used their tractor to help us move the stone and get it more level. The stone ended up covering the patio area we wanted to create as well as behind the RV and the area where we wanted to put a shed.
After the stone was in, Tim started building a platform to be the base for a shed and got a shed ordered. That work took a few more days and then when the shed arrived, our friend Gary and neighbor Rich helped Tim put the shed together. You would think the work was done there, right?
Well, Tim decided to build shelves for in the shed rather that just purchasing metal shelving units that I expected. More work for us, especially Tim, but he likes having projects. The shelves have been in for a couple of weeks now, and Tim has decided there isn’t enough support under each shelf. So now, he is adding more support under the shelves. I think he likes having projects!
So with all the work setting up our site, we haven’t been exploring the area very much. When we aren’t working on the projects, we have been visiting family and have settled into a weekly routine. We visit with Sue and Greg most Saturdays, and then spend time on Sundays with my Aunt Tish. We have found that we like the Catholic Church in Inverness much better than the one near The Villages. It works out well to go the Sunday Mass and then take lunch to Aunt Tish and spend time with her.
In addition to visiting family, we have been able to catch up with friends we have made through Thousand Trails. Most members spend some time at Three Flags if they are wintering in Florida which makes it nice. So far, our friends Gary and Jen, Ed and Sharon, and Nancy have had stays here. It makes it nice to be able to visit and catch up here at our site in the park. Our friends Anna and Mark arrived this past Saturday so I now have an early morning walking buddy.
The park has activities each week and we have been participating in some of them. So far, we have attended a pancake breakfast, a potluck dinner, and daily exercise classes. So this week, I plan to walk with Anna at 7 AM and then attend class at 9 AM so I am definitely started to get more exercise which I definitely need.
In between the work and socializing, we have gotten out to eat at a few local restaurants and found the Big Bass Grill on Lake Panosoffkee that has a great view of the lake. They have a nice outdoor deck and musical entertainment on the weekends so we have to go back to check that out. We have some plans over the next few weeks for the holidays so I will have more scenic pictures to share in the next post.
